my horse has a problem with his first barrel and getting the correct lead which makes our time slower. How can i get him on the correct lead going into the barrel?

I'm 16 years old and im from Ohio. im a member of the cross country team, cheerleading squad, and also 4h. i live with my mom and step dad and i have one older brother who is married and in the marines. i love horses they are my passion. i have two great horses that i barrel race and show with. if you want to find out more about me just message me and ill try to answer your questions.
my horses:
I have a quarter horse named dusty. ive had him for 2 years now && he is the love of my life.hes a beautiful buckskin that tends to catch a lot of attention from the crowd when we show. he can be the biggest pain in my butt but hes always there for me when i need him && he would do anything for me =] hes my everything horse from running events to showing in pleasure.
I also have a thoroughbred named bender. ive owned him for 3 months. he was a off the track race horse that is the biggest baby and the calmest race horse i have ever seen. im training him for barrels and anything in contest. he is sure to make a splash when i get done with him and im sure he has a lot of skill and heart.
